You open your Google Ads account and the numbers look fine. Clicks are up. Spend is up. People are landing on your site. Then you check the one number that actually pays the bills, the phone log, and it is quiet. That gap between clicks and calls is one of the most frustrating things a home service owner deals with, and it almost always comes down to a short list of fixable causes.
Here is the short version before we dig in. Clicks without calls is usually a tracking problem, a traffic problem, or a message problem, not a “spend more money” problem. Most owners reach for the budget slider when the real fix costs nothing. Let’s walk through what is actually going on.
Clicks but no calls usually means one of these things
When Google Ads sends clicks but the phone stays quiet, the cause is almost always one of these: you cannot see the calls you are already getting, the clicks are coming from the wrong searches, or the ad and the page are sending mixed signals so the right person bounces before they dial. A single click on a high-cost term can run real money. Our own data pull put the cost per click on “google ads not converting” type keywords at $38.61 with high competition, and home service keywords are not far behind. When clicks cost that much, a low conversion rate is not a small leak, it is money walking out the door every day. The good news is that every cause below is something you can check this week without raising your budget a dollar. Each one quietly drives down your conversions, and most owners never realize how many of these are stacking up at the same time.
You probably can’t see the calls you are getting
This is the one almost everybody misses. Most owners count form fills as conversions and never set up call tracking, so every customer who taps the number and books a job shows up in Google Ads as a click that did not convert. The phone rang. The job got booked. The report just never knew. If your conversion tracking only watches form submissions, your Google Ads campaign is flying half blind.
Before you change anything else, turn on call conversion tracking so calls from your ads and your call extensions get counted as conversions. Google walks through the setup in its guide to measuring calls from ads. Once it is on, a lot of non-converting spend turns out to have been working the whole time, and the campaigns that actually drive calls finally get credit.
The traffic is the wrong traffic
Plenty of clicks come from people who were never going to call you. If your match types are loose, Google shows your ad for searches that are close in wording but wrong in keyword intent. Someone searching “how to fix a leaky faucet myself” clicks a plumbing ad, reads for ten seconds, and leaves. That is a paid click and a dead lead. The fix is rarely about traffic volume, it is about matching the right keywords to people ready to book, so your conversions come from searches with real buying intent.
Pull your search terms report and read what people actually typed before they clicked. You will spot the junk fast. Then tighten things up:
- Add negative keywords for “diy,” “how to,” “jobs,” “salary,” and competitor names that keep showing up.
- Lean on phrase and exact match for your core money keywords instead of wide-open broad match.
- Check your location targeting so you are paying for clicks inside your service area, not three towns over.
- Split your best service terms into their own google ads campaign so the budget goes to searches that book work.
The ad promised one thing, the page says another
When the searcher is right and the click is real, the next thing that kills the call is a mismatch. If your ad copy says “same-day drain cleaning” and the landing page opens with a generic “Welcome to our company” header, the visitor has to work to confirm they are in the right place. Most will not bother. They came in hot and you cooled them off.
The page a click lands on should repeat the promise from the ad, say where you work, and put your phone number where a thumb can reach it. Use call and location ad extensions so the number and your service area show right in the ad, before the click even happens. Tight ad copy and a matching landing page also lift your quality score, which lowers what you pay per click. The tighter the match between the search, the ad, and the page, the higher your conversion rate climbs without touching the budget, and the more of those clicks turn into actual conversions.
The path to call you is harder than it should be
Most of these clicks happen on a phone, often from someone standing in a flooded laundry room or a yard full of wasps. They want to tap a number, not fill out a five-field form and wait for a callback. Every extra step between the click and the call costs you jobs.
Walk your own landing page on your phone like a stranger would. Is there a click-to-call button at the top? Does the page load fast? Is there a quick line of proof, a review count or a years-in-business note, that tells a nervous homeowner you are the real deal? Small fixes here often do more for your conversion rate than any bid change. When in doubt, make calling you the easiest thing on the screen.
When the numbers say slow down, or get help
Sometimes the account is fine and the math just is not there yet. Give a new campaign a couple of weeks of real spend and real clicks before you judge it, because a handful of clicks tells you nothing. If the calls still are not coming after tracking is on, the traffic is clean, and the page is tight, then it is time to look at your bid strategy and budget, or to bring in someone who does this every day. There is no shame in that. You did not start your business to babysit a google ads campaign, and the cost of a wasted month at $38 a click adds up fast.
This is the work we do. Google Ads management for home service businesses, built around the calls that actually book jobs instead of clicks that just look good in a chart. We turn on call tracking, clean out the wasted spend, and tie every dollar to real work coming in the door.
